There are currently nearly 5,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons employed in the U.S., according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The agency updated its employment data May 15 to reflect 2025 information.
Four statistics on the oral and maxillofacial surgeon workforce to know:
1. There are 4,910 oral surgeons employed in the U.S.
2. The states with the highest employment of oral surgeons are California, New York, Virginia, Georgia and Alabama.
3. New York City; Newark, N.J.; and Jersey City, N.J., are the cities with the highest employment of oral surgeons.
4. The workplace settings with the highest employment of oral surgeons include dental offices, hospitals, physician offices and educational institutions.
