5 notes on dental hygienist turnover in 2024

Eleven percent of dental hygienists are currently applying for or plan to apply for new jobs by the end of 2024, according to Dentalpost’s 2024 Dental Salary Survey.

Dentalpost surveyed 1,802 registered dental hygienists from July to October 2023 for this year’s report. 

Here are five facts on dental hygienist turnover:

1. About 19% of responding dental hygienists reported that they had changed employers within the last 12 months.

2. Some of the top reasons for changing jobs were new location, higher pay, better work environment and more appreciation. 

3. Eighty-six percent of dental hygienists reported that they achieved some or all of their goals by changing jobs. 

4. Forty-one percent of dental hygienists said they were considering applying for new jobs before 2025, while 11.84% said they were currently applying for or planned to apply for new jobs by the end of this year. 

5. Dental hygienists reported that they primarily use online jobs boards, social media and staffing agencies to look for new jobs.
