Aptos, Calif.-based Cabrillo College has addressed all but one of the eight violations that placed its dental hygiene program on probation and at risk of losing its accreditation, Santa Cruz Local reported July 6.
Five notes:
1. The Dental Hygiene Board of California visited the college in February and found several violations, including improper staff ratios, students being advanced through the program without meeting prerequisites, and students having access to the clinic without supervision and lacking the minimum clinical hours required.
2. Board members suggested during meetings held in March that the program should lose its accreditation, but opted instead to levy a $5,000 fine and give the school an opportunity to correct the violations during a three-year probationary period.
3. According to a July 1 letter from the board, the college has addressed seven of the violations. The only remaining violation is the staffing requirement, which the college has until Aug. 17 to address.
4. The college was found to be in violation with only one full-time employee for the program, and is required to hire one more full-time staff member.
5. Santa Cruz Local previously reported that some of the program’s issues may have stemmed from a “chaotic” and “toxic” work environment, which the college denied.
