The East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine has launched a transfer agreement for dental hygiene graduates to continue their education.

The dental school is offering graduates from a dental hygiene associate degree program at any community college in North Carolina to enroll in ECU’s Bachelor of Science in university studies, according to an April 10 news release from the university.

Dental hygiene students who complete the BS program can work in other settings outside of clinical practice, including teaching positions in dental hygiene programs and graduate-level education in related fields.

In addition, dental hygienists who are employed at the university’s dental school can receive tuition assistance for the program.

North Carolina currently has about 9,000 dental hygienists and around 11 million residents, creating a shortage of preventive oral health services.

ECU’s Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Dental Medicine collaborated to launch the program, the release said.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
