Petoskey-based North Central Michigan College has unanimously approved a dental hygiene degree, the school’s first for-credit dental offering.

The three-year program will have one year of general education and introductory dental coursework and two years of classroom and clinical instruction, according to a Dec. 10 news release from the college.

Students will receive an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Hygiene. In addition to the program being the first for-credit dental offering at NCMC, it is the first dental hygiene program in Northern Michigan.

Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and the American Board of Dental Examiners clinical examination, qualifying them for licensure as dental hygienists in Michigan.

The college aims to have the first cohort of students begin in Fall 2028, the release said.
