The number of dental anesthesiologists in the U.S. has increased from zero in 2018 to 97 in 2021, according to recent data from the American Dental Association.
The ADA collected data on the total number of dentists and the ratio of dentists per capita in a January 2022 report.
Dental anesthesiologists are specifically-trained dental specialists responsible for pain management in patients. Given the high-level training and requirements for entering residency, many dentists start practicing dentistry before earning credentials as an anesthesiologist.
