The HHS Department’s Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response has selected two locations to demonstrate a saline manufacturing system that may help prevent or mitigate IV fluid shortages in the U.S.
Five notes for dentists:
1. DEKA Research and Development Corp. began developing its automated, point-of-care manufacturing system, named Caspian, in 2019 to address medical supply chain disruptions.
2. The company’s efforts are supported by President Donald Trump’s May 5 executive order aimed at promoting domestic production of medicine, according to a June 5 news release.
3. The Caspian system is being developed in New Hampshire and will be distributed to two sites this fall for demonstration: Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and the FDA.
4. Walter Reed Medical Center will work to show how the system can help medical facilities, while the FDA will conduct its own review of the system.
5. The ASPR is working with DEKA to complete the final steps as part of the production process, with the goal of producing up to 500 bags of IV fluid each day.
