4 things to know about the restructuring of the traditional dental office

Raul Garcia, DMD, professor and chair of Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s Department of Health Policy & Health Services Research, recently published the article The Restructuring of Dental Practice: Dentists as Employees or Owners in The Journal of the American Dental Association.

Here are four points to know from the article.

•    Large group practices that employee dentists are on the rise and smaller private practices are on the decline.
•    There are a greater number of dentists entering the workforce than are retiring.
•    Recent graduates have high levels of debt and may not be able to afford to buy into private practices, hence the attraction to dental service organizations.
•    Larger dental offices are not necessarily competing with private practices for patients, but rather seeking to expand patient bases to those who are not already receiving oral healthcare.
