What does patient need for dental care look like in the United States? Here are five statistics on tooth decay in adults age 20 to 64, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.

•    92 percent of adults have had dental caries in their permanent teeth.
•    White adults and those in higher income families with more education had more tooth decay.
•    26 percent of adults have untreated decay.
•    Black and Hispanic adults, younger adults and those in low-income families with less education have more untreated decay.
•    Adults have an average of 3.28 decayed or missing permanent teeth and 13.65 decayed and missing permanent surfaces.
