California county receives grant for mobile dentist program: 3 key notes

The Dental Transformation Initiative — Local Dental Pilot Program awarded Sacramento County in California $10 million to create a traveling dentist program, Capital Public Radio reports.

1. Olivia Kasirye, MD, Sacramento County health officer, provided data to the grant program.

2. Dr. Kasirye said that utilization rates were approximately 20 percent for the Denti-Cal population. After the county began working with dental plans and providers, utilization rates have gone up to 40 percent.

3. Dr. Kasirye said to Capital Public Radio that the department wants to increase the percent of people receiving dental care by five percent each year.
