The researchers found that Cleveland’s LGBT community considered dental care inaccessible, even if they had insurance coverage. The largest barriers to receiving care were fear of discrimination and cost.

Findings from the study include:

•    20 percent of transgender people who didn’t receive regular dental care cited fear of discrimination as the reason.
•    Cleveland’s LGBT community visited the dentist more often than the general population.
•    Participants in the study expressed desire for providers with dedicated health services for LBGT patients.

The researchers concluded that dentists need not provide different care for the LBGT community but should provide care free from negative experiences or discrimination, according to the report.
