Dentists named to highest-paying jobs list — 6 notes on compensation

Dentists were recently ranked second on Forbes’ top 20 highest-paying medical jobs list.

Here are six notes on dentist compensation in the U.S.:

  1. The average annual salary for dentists is $172,290, with Delaware paying $206,270 on average, the highest of any state.
  2. The median salary for dentists is $155,040.
  3. Dentist owners are more satisfied with their compensation compared to associate dentists. 
  4. Hourly pay for dentists is projected to decrease $13.72 per hour by 2033 when adjusted for inflation.
  5. With inflation adjustment, the average annual salary for dentists has dropped from $206,000 in 2004 to $172,290 in 2022. 
  6. The U.S. was ranked as the second-best paying country for dentists, behind only Switzerland.
