Here are six takeaways:

1. New guidelines by the Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Body state dentists in Michigan must complete a minimum of three hours of pain and symptom management education to renew their license. The rule went into effect Sept. 1, 2017.

2. Daniel Becker, DDS, led the seminar, which covered:

• An overview of preemptive versus rescue pain management
• Non opioid and opioid analgesics in dental practices
• Use of glucocorticosteroids before and during special surgery
• Local anesthetics

3. The American Dental Association recommends dentists consider nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as the first line of treatment for the management of acute pain.

4. Dr. Becker added that opiods should only be prescribed if pain persists after doses of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, acetaminophen and the combination of those drugs have been optimized.

5. Over 200 dental professionals attended the seminar.

6. Since the beginning of this year, Advanced Periodontics and Implantology has offered 20 hours of lectures in periodontics, dental implants, restorative dentistry, pain management and infection control.
