The polymer was developed by a team of University of Colorado Boulder engineers. Current cavity-filling techniques can take up to four applications of polymer, with each layer requiring a light-curing procedure.

The new material is designed for one application followed by a single light-curing procedure, according to the report.

3M Health also found that the new polymer may be more wear resistant over time than currently used materials.

3M ESPE and CU-Boulder engineers developed Filtek Bulk Fill with support from the National Institutes of Health.
