Study finds poor oral health common among elite athletes

A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has found that 18 percent of athletes participating in the London 20120 Olympic Games said that their oral health negatively impacted their performance, according to a Health Canal report.

Nearly half of the athletes at the London games, 46.5 percent, reported that they had not been to a dentist in the past year.

“Things like tooth brushing techniques and higher fluoride toothpaste could prevent the toothache and associated sleeping and training difficulties that can make the crucial difference between gold and silver,” said study author Professor Ian Needleman, according to the report.
