Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed legislation that makes several changes to the practice of dentistry in order to increase access for patients.

Among its changes, House Bill 3934 expands the list of recognized accrediting agencies to include the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation, the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada or another accrediting association recognized by the U.S. Education Department.

The bill also authorizes dental assistants to work under general supervision of a dentist to assist hygienists with certain procedures.

Additionally, the new law allows a patient of record to be established by teledentistry for emergency or hygiene treatment if the patient is physically located at the treatment facility and the dentist is not readily available.

The bill went into effect immediately after the governor’s signature, according to a May 12 news release.

At the Becker's 5th Annual Future of Dentistry Roundtable, taking place September 14-15 in Chicago, dental leaders and executives will gain insights into emerging technologies, practice growth strategies and the evolving landscape of dental care delivery, with a focus on innovation, patient experience and operational excellence.
