There are 24,500 active dental hygienists in California, the most of any state by more than 9,000 hygienists, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Across the U.S., there are a total of 222,740 dental hygienists. In addition to California, there are more than 10,000 hygienists in Texas, New York and Florida.
Washington, D.C., has just 320 dental hygienists, the fewest of any state.
The agency updated employment data May 15 to reflect 2025 information, the latest available.
