Although executives have varying opinions on who is best positioned to win the next era of dentistry, they do largely agree on what will separate the winners from the rest: financial discipline, a solid operational foundation and a model built around what patients actually want.
Three dental executives joined Becker’s Future of Dentistry Roundtable Sept. 14-15 to discuss the trends and operational tactics that will fuel growth in the future.

Question: Who is best positioned to gain market share in the next era of dentistry — independent practices, DSOs, specialty groups or will it be another model?
Jaspreet Gill, BDS, DDS, Founder, Countryside Smiles (Murphy, Texas): I think specialty groups and a super GP model. Patients are looking for everything under one roof. They do not like moving practice to practice for referrals. So, if we can have a practice where we have all the specialties or gps who are trained and accredited and credentialed more in specialty procedures, that would be a place for patient satisfaction, patient experience and a business model that will sustain the quickness and the deliverability of dentistry that the patient is seeking.
Ashish Bagai. Co-CEO at Vitana Pediatric & Orthodontic Partners (Plantation, Fla.): I think all of them could succeed if the internal operations and philosophies are consistent. One of the most important things we found over the last five years with regards to data is capital structure. If you are responsible about the way you finance the business and the organization and the way you pace yourself going forward, that’s going to be critical in the way you build this.
Justin Lai, DDS. Chief Dental Director at Dent-Well (Houston): The individual private practice they’re still going to be around in perpetuity. When you look at who can get that growth in the next five years, I think you’re looking at those DSOs that have that solid foundation, the ones with a balanced cash flow to really take advantage of the ever-changing dental climate.
