A New York woman was recently charged with felony grand larceny after allegedly scamming a dentist of more than $15,000, WKTV reported Nov. 4.

Kayla Phillips, 28, allegedly sent text messages to a dentist claiming to be a former patient and  threatening to take legal action over a past procedure. Ms. Phillips offered to settle the dispute in exchange for $40,000.

The dentist gave Ms. Phillips money on two separate occasions totaling more than $12,000. Family members later encouraged the dentist to contact local police.

Ms. Phillips set up another meeting Nov. 3 to obtain additional money. Investigators were stationed nearby and immediately arrested Ms. Phillips after the transaction.

The dentist reportedly lost more than $15,000 as a result of the scam.

Ms. Phillips was released on an appearance ticket, and is scheduled to return to court later this month.
