Installation of an amalgam separator will ensure compliance with a rule from the Environmental Protection Agency that requires dental facilities to collect all waste amalgam and bans the use of clear liners with a pH of less than 6 or more than 8.

The EPA’s rule aims to lessen the amount of mercury that enters public spaces, especially waterways.
