SmileDirectClub drops antitrust case against Georgia Board of Dentistry

Teledentistry company SmileDirectClub has agreed to dismiss its antitrust case against the Georgia Board of Dentistry.

The company sued the board in 2018 for allegedly violating antitrust laws when the board adopted a rule requiring dentists to provide direct supervision of digital scans used to fit orthodontic aligners. SDC said the rule would hurt its business model and reduce access to care.

According to court documents filed Dec. 10 and 11, both parties agreed to voluntarily dismiss the case and bear their own respective costs and fees.

The move comes after SmileDirectClub announced Dec. 8 that it would shut down its global operations immediately and cease offering its teledentistry services. The company was unable to secure additional investors after filing for bankruptcy in October.
