Researchers at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Eastman Institute for Oral Health received a five-year, $3.1 million grant from the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to develop an AI-powered platform designed to detect oral disease outside of traditional dental clinics.
The platform, called SMARTeeth++, combines oral imaging, AI and patient health information to identify and measure early signs of tooth decay and gum disease. The funding will be used to build on a prior study in which the platform was used for oral screenings during obstetric visits, detecting early-stage decay in 71.7% of participants, according to an Aug. 31 news release.
The project is led by Jin Xiao, DDS, PhD, professor and associate dean for oral health education, alongside co-principal investigators Jiebo Luo, PhD, a computer science professor, and Tong Tong Wu, PhD, a professor of biostatistics and computational biology. The team will develop two versions of the platform: a mobile tool for individual self-screening and a clinical management platform for hygienists and other health professionals.
