Dr. Oluwabunmi Tokede, a researcher and associate professor at the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry, has been awarded a five-year, $3.54 million grant to develop OpenMouth, an AI-powered research platform.
Dr. Tokede said in an Aug. 5 news release that the project was inspired by a longstanding infrastructure gap in dental research. While medical researchers have had access to shared collections of de-identified patient data, dentistry has lacked comparable resources, leaving researchers to rely on claims data or smaller institutional record sets. OpenMouth aims to make large-scale dental research more accessible to investigators across the field.
OpenMouth will build on the multi-institutional BigMouth dental data repository, incorporating AI tools that allow researchers to ask questions in plain language and receive assistance identifying patient populations, building study queries and conducting analyses. Human oversight of study design and analysis will be maintained throughout, Dr. Tokede said.
