Number of dental schools in the U.S. since 1950

There were 30 more dental schools in the U.S. in 2023 than there were in 1950, according to data from the American Dental Association.

The data compared the number of dental schools in the U.S. in 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2023. 

In 1950, there were 42 U.S. dental schools compared to 72 schools in 2023. 

Between 1997 and 2023, there was a net gain of 18 dental schools.

1960: 47 dental schools

1970: 53 dental schools

1980: 60 dental schools

1990: 56 dental schools

2000: 55 dental schools

2005: 56 dental schools

2010: 58 dental schools

2015: 65 dental schools

2020: 67 dental schools

2023: 72 dental schools
