ADA: Should dentists immediately get the COVID-19 vaccine?

The American Dental Association released an informational resource Oct. 6 to help dentists learn about the COVID-19 vaccine approval process and decide if they should receive one once it becomes available.

The ADA's resource, titled "Should I Be Vaccinated for COVID-19?," explains the vaccine distribution framework outlined by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, which prioritizes first responders and healthcare workers, including dentists and dental hygienists.

The resource establishes that it is each dental professional's personal decision whether to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The ADA encouraged dentists to make their choice based on concerns regarding their infection probability, the safety of those they encounter and risks associated with a novel vaccine.

The ADA also pointed out that it remains unknown whether healthcare employees will be required to get a COVID-19 vaccine once one becomes available.
