CDA: 5 factors affecting how quickly dentists get COVID-19 vaccine

Below is an overview of the factors that affect how quickly California dentists will receive their COVID-19 vaccine, per the California Dental Association.

California is in the process of administering the COVID-19 vaccine to individuals within phase 1a, which includes 3 million people and is divided into three tiers. Dentists fall in phase 1a tier 3. The state anticipates receiving enough vials to vaccinate everyone in phase 1a with the first dose by the end of January.

Vaccine distribution plans are determined by each local health department. Below are five factors that affect how quickly a local health department can vaccinate individuals:

1. Number of vaccines allocated to each local health department. This is largely determined by the regions' population.

2. The number of individuals in tiers 1 and 2.

3. Technology and staffing of the local health department will determine how easily jurisdictions can reach out to dental teams and how easy it is to sign up for vaccine appointments.

4. Size of the local health department region will determine how many resources will be required to set up vaccination clinics.

5. How many providers are able to administer the vaccine.
