Two Kentucky lawmakers have said they intend to reintroduce legislation that would make community water fluoridation optional in the state, Kentucky Public Radio reported Oct. 21.

Three notes:

1. State legislators considered a bill to reverse water fluoridation requirements during the last legislative session, with the bill passing the House but failing in the Senate.

2. Sen. Steve Rawlings and Rep. Mark Hart said during a meeting with the Interim Joint Committee on State Government that they would support future legislation to make fluoridation optional.

3. Opponents and supporters of fluoride continued to debate the issue during the meeting. Kentucky Dental Association President Stephen Robertson, DMD, urged legislators to not go back on water fluoridation, while Jack Kall, DMD, the executive chair of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology, referred to fluoride as a neurotoxin that interferes with brain development.
