Louisiana Sen. Mike Fesi has introduced a second bill to repeal the Louisiana Department of Health’s water fluoridation program and prohibit public water systems from automatically adding the mineral.
Four notes:
1. Senate Bill 4 would remove a state rule that requires public water systems with more than 5,000 service connections to add fluoride. Instead, local communities would vote on whether fluoride should be added to their water supply.
2. In order for an election on water fluoridation to be held, a community would have to gather a petition with signatures from at least 15% of voters.
3. Mr. Fesi previously introduced a similar bill last year. The bill was passed by the Senate, but it did not make it out of the House Committee on Health and Welfare.
4. If passed, the bill would go into effect Jan. 1.
