Seniors prone to illness caused by poor oral hygiene

Older adults and nursing facility residents with poor oral hygiene have an increased risk of health problems, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society

Here are the four key findings:

1. Seniors are two times more likely to get cavities than other adults.
2. Older adults have a higher risk of oral infections.
3. Up to 64 percent of older adults have periodontitis.
4. Chronic oral infection is a risk factor for heart disease, and can also lead to the spread of infection to artificial joints and artificial heart valves.
