US Air Force adds dental laser technology to treat periodontal disease

The U.S. Air Force has partnered with Millennium Dental Technologies to implement laser dentistry for the treatment of periodontal disease.

The combined use of a specialized laser with Millennium's LANAP protocol removes harmful bacteria and preserves healthy tissue, according to a Nov. 9 news release from Millennium.

The procedure makes no incisions or sutures, helping save healthy teeth from extraction.

The method is the first implementation of laser periodontal surgery at the Air Force Postgraduate Dental School, which includes The 59th Dental Group, the Air Force's largest dental unit, located on the Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.

Sixteen Air Force periodontists and residents were trained and certified through the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, the release said.
