The group used nanotechnology to create the products, which are capable of reaching below the gums, cavities and hard to reach areas within the teeth to treat plaque and bacteria.
Testing on mice showed the products can wipe out infections with just one treatment, but another round of testing is needed before the team can get FDA approval for human clinical trials. Once approved, the products could begin being sold in stores within the next two years, according to Leisha Armijo-Martin, a nanotoxicologist at the university.
