UAB oral oncology clinic among 1st to use augmented reality in head and neck surgery

The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s oral oncology clinic is among the first in the Southeast to use augmented reality in head and neck cancer surgery.

The clinic began using the Brainlab Mixed Reality Viewer that provides a 3D view of head and neck tumors, according to a Feb. 2 news release. Surgeons are able to use the scans to maintain normal tissue and anatomy during procedures, leading to better patient outcomes.

UAB is the only hospital in the state and one of 15 hospitals in the U.S. to use the platform.
