Massachusetts Dental Society agrees to 9% pay cut: 5 things to know

After a year of negotiating payment rates, Delta Dental of Massachusetts and state dentists agreed to changes in the insurer's coverage plans, according to The Boston Globe.

Here are five things to know:

1. In 2017, Delta Dental proposed a lower-cost plan that could potentially lower reimbursement rates by 30 percent. This started the snowball effect of outrage from dentists over the insurer.

2. Dentists believed Delta Dental would sell Total Choice PPO, a lower-cost plan, over dentists preferred plan Premier.

3. Earlier in June, Delta Dental made changes to the Premier plan to allow the company to continue selling the plan for year in the future. Delta Dental will also continue selling Total Choice PPO.

4. The new proposal requires dentists to take a 9 percent to 10 percent pay cut, according to the Massachusetts Dental Society, which dentists are in support of. The state's division of insurance still needs to approve the proposal.

5. Dentists were outraged by Delta Dental executives' salaries. The federal government estimates Massachusetts dentists earn $175,580 annually.
