$1K dental benefits cap for Iowa Medicaid members delayed: 6 things to know

State officials are delaying the enforcement of a $1,000 annual dental benefit maximum for Medicaid members aged 21 years and older until Sept. 1, according to The Gazette.

Here are six things to know:

1. The benefits cap will also affect Dental Wellness Plan beneficiaries. Members will subject to the maximum through June 30, 2019.

2. More than 300,000 people are members in the Dental Wellness Plan. The cap on benefits was originally scheduled to go in effect July 1.

3. The cap does not include preventative, diagnostic or emergency dental services as well as anesthesia for oral surgery and denture fabrication. Annual checkups, cleanings, X-rays and fluoride treatments are not included in the $1,000 limit.

4. The decision to delay the maximum comes after Iowa City-based University of Iowa College of Dentistry decided not to accept new adult patients covered by Iowa's Dental Wellness Plan.

5. Private practice dentists have also begun to turn away Medicaid beneficiaries because of the dental cap.

6. Iowa's Dental Wellness Plan is dental coverage for Medicaid patients issued by private insurers Delta Dental and MCNA Dental.
