Lawsuit against Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's $657M dental contract sparks back to life: 6 insights

An Ingham County (Mich.) Circuit Court judge demanded officials to submit an affidavit and testify in a deposition in a lawsuit between MCNA Insurance and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, according to Crain's Detroit Business.

Here are six insights:

1. MCNA lost to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan in a bid for a share of the state's $657 million Health Kids Dental contract.

2. Now, MCNA is fighting against Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's use of DentaQuest as a subcontractor. MCNA is challenging DentaQuest for business in other states and argues DentaQuest is Blue Cross' subcontractor because Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's contract violations may have caused it to lose out on the bid.

3. Delta Dental of Michigan is currently the sole provider for the Healthy Kids Dental contract. DentaQuest and Delta Dental of Michigan are scheduled to split the contract, effective Oct. 1.

4. MCNA also sued Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget officials, arguing the officials showed favoritism toward Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

5. Blue Cross Blue Shield sought out a contract with DentaQuest in larger efforts to improve dental care and oral health services.

6. As of Aug. 15, Michigan DTMB officials had 14 days to provide affidavits and make employees available for depositions 10 days after the affidavits.
