Dentists made headlines in the media this week because of various alleged scandals, including illegally prescribing drugs, insurance fraud and fake credentials.

Here's the rundown:

1. Glenn Head, DMD, has been accused of handing out opioids and other drugs without prescriptions.

2. A federal judge on May 2 ordered Richard Schott, DDS, to forfeit nearly $1 million, which he collected by committing insurance fraud.

3. A federal judge on May 2 sentenced former MetroHealth dentist Yazan Al-Madani, DDS, to 10 years and one month in prison for his role in a fraud scheme at the Cleveland-based hospital.

4. Pankaj Goyal, DDS, who was accused of using false credentials to obtain an anesthesia permit, has pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges.

5. A former employee at a New Haven, Ind., dental practice has been accused of hacking into the practice's phones and website to spread false information that the practice had closed and that William Downie, DDS, had an alleged drug problem.
