A Virginia Beach, Va., dentist pleaded guilty in federal court May 9 to conspiracy to distribute medically unnecessary oxycodone pills, according to the South Side Daily.
Gary Hartman, DDS, was accused of leading an elaborate scheme to prescribe opioid pills for his personal use and the use of co-conspirators between 2014 and 2018.
Prosecutors argued that Dr. Hartman would prescribe oxycodone without medical need to his high school friends, know as the first category of co-conspirators. Those friends would fill the prescriptions and bring the pills back to Dr. Hartman.
The second category of co-conspirators was a fellow dentist. Dr. Hartman and the dentist would allegedly write oxycodone prescriptions to each other along with muscle relaxants for their own personal use.
Dr. Hartman was also accused of promising patients free dental work in exchange for filling oxycodone prescriptions. This was Dr. Hartman's third category of co-conspirators.
In total, Dr. Hartman wrote 766 medically unnecessary prescriptions that totaled almost 40,000 oxycodone pills. He faces up to 20 years in prison and will be sentenced Oct. 2.
