Orthodontics leader Dr. David Turpin dies at 87

David Turpin, DDS, recognized worldwide as a leader in the orthodontics field, died May 29 at the age of 87.

Dr. Turpin earned his dental degree at the University of Iowa, after which he served in the U.S. Navy. He then completed his orthodontic residency at the University of Washington before entering private practice, according to a June 25 news release.

During his 37-year career in private practice, Dr. Turpin also served as a clinical faculty member at the University of Washington in Seattle. In addition to serving as a member of the American Association of Orthodontists’ Board of Trustees, Dr. Turpin held various leadership roles at academic journals, including editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. 

Dr. Turpin published 34 scientific articles and 135 AJO-DO editorials. He also delivered 155 lectures over the course of his career, the AAO said. 

A memorial service for Dr. Turpin will be held July 12.
