General Motors reinstates dental benefits to 49,000 striking employees

General Motors has reinstated dental and other health insurance benefits to the 49,000 striking union employees as of Sept. 26, according to MLive.com.

The company told United Auto Workers that effective Sept. 16 all medical, dental and vision insurance coverage would be suspended. Sept. 16 was the first day the national strike began.

Terry Dittes, vice president of the UAW's General Motors department said that terminating striking employees' benefits was "irresponsible," and a way of "toying with the lives of hundreds of thousands of our UAW families."

In a Sept. 26 statement, General Motors officials said they are "concerned about the significant confusion caused around employees' healthcare coverage." In turn, the company decided to keep all benefits in place for the 49,000 striking hourly employees "so they have no disruption to their medical care, including vision, prescription and dental coverage."

Employees are being instructed to submit any claims to General Motors as the company "will continue to provide them the coverage the rely on given the circumstances."
