California Medicaid program expands coverage to preventive dental services

California's Medicaid program has added new options to its dental program, including fluoride benefits for children and reimbursing dentists for tobacco cessation counseling, according to the California Dental Association.

Medi-Cal's dental program will now cover fluoride treatment once every four months for patients under the age of 6 as a benefit, aligning with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's guidelines.

Dentists can also receive reimbursement for tobacco counseling. They are also recommended to refer patients to case managers for additional healthcare needs.

Other changes include extended reimbursement for treating patients with special needs. Additionally, the program will coverlab-processed crowns for children.
