Houston dentist shares tips on how to be an LGBTQ ally in the field

Alex Barrera, DDS, discussed ways dentists can take steps to address the health disparities facing the LGBTQ community in a recent blog post for the American Dental Association.

Five of his tips:

  • If you have heterosexual privelege, acknowledge it and use it to stand up against discrimination.

  • Be mindful of inclusive word choices, and don't make assumptions about anyone's gender or sexuality.

  • Be open to making mistakes and continually learning.

  • Make sure your allyship is impactful by making it visible.

  • Celebrate people's queerness instead of downplaying it.
