7 ways new dentists can avoid burnout

Dentistry can be stressful at times, resulting in some new dentists feeling exhausted and unsure of how to regain enthusiasm for their work.

In an Aug. 17 post for the American Dental Association's New Dentist Now blog, Sheila Soroushian, DMD, shared the following tips for new dentists to combat burnout:

  1. Revisit the reasons you initially wanted to enter the field.

  2. Expand your network by involving yourself with a local dental society or joining the state dental board.

  3. Share your industry knowledge by teaching at a dental school or instructing a hygiene or assisting program.

  4. Consider sharpening your skills by joining a mentoring group, study club or continuing education program.

  5. Take volunteer positions to help patients without dental care access.

  6. Assess the efficiency of your practice's processes and the quality of its systems.

  7. Try moving to another sector of the dental industry, such as academia or community health center management.
