'New, disruptive platform' aims to make dental care more affordable

Chewsi, a Providence, R.I.-based subsidiary of Delta Dental, developed an app to help patients save on dental care, its president said in a Sept. 20 Q&A with The Boston Globe.

After downloading the free app, users can find a Chewsi dentist near them and schedule an appointment. Users must bring their smartphones to the appointment and use the app to pay, which will automatically apply discounts to their bill.

"Our goal when we launched Chewsi in late 2017 was simple: People need access to convenient, affordable dental care, and we wanted to create a new, disruptive platform that would provide that care for everyone," Chewsi President Blaine Carroll told The Boston Globe.

Chewsi differs from traditional dental insurance because it has no exclusions, premiums or limitations, according to Mr. Carroll. He told The Boston Globe it differs from discounted dental plans because it requires no annual or monthly subscription charges.

Chewsi's network comprises more than 4,700 dental locations in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Virginia, Hawaii and Iowa, and it plans on continually expanding. Mr. Carroll told The Boston Globe the service has helped users save more than $1 million since its launch.
