ADA, partners receive $3.5M grant to study respiratory tissue cells in children

The American Dental Association Science & Research Institute and a group of collaborators have received a $3.5 million grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to map out cells in respiratory tissues from adolescence to adulthood.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded in 2015 by Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, to fund education, community and justice projects. The recent grant was a part of a $33 million funding initiative to support research into childhood diseases, according to an Aug. 27 news release.

Researchers, led by Kevin Byrd, DDS, PhD, will develop cell reference data using tissue from the nose, mouth and airways for the Human Cell Atlas, an international group dedicated to mapping every type of cell in the human body.
