Percentage of private practice dentists in solo practice by year

The number of private practice dentists in solo practice in the U.S. has fallen 18.8 percentage points in the past 22 years, according to the American Dental Association.

This data comes from a report from the American Dental Association published in March. There was no "Distribution of Dentists" survey for 2016, 2018 or 2020.

Below is the percentage of private practice dentists in solo practice from 1999 to 2021:

1999 — 65 percent

2000 — 63.7 percent

2001 — 66.5 percent

2002 — 64.3 percent

2003 — 62.9 percent

2004 — 63.3 percent

2005 — 63.1 percent

2006 — 64.8 percent

2007 — 61.2 percent

2008 — 59.8 percent

2009 — 58.9 percent

2010 — 55.2 percent

2011 — 54.1 percent

2012 — 53.8 percent

2013 — 53.5 percent

2014 — 53.5 percent

2015 — 52.6 percent

2016 — n/a

2017 — 51.7 percent

2018 — n/a

2019 — 50.3

2020 — n/a

2021 — 46.2 percent
