California dentist charged in $5M scheme to defraud NBA players' fund

A California dentist is among 19 people charged in connection with a scheme to defraud the NBA's Health and Welfare Benefit Plan of $5 million, the U.S Justice Department said April 27.

Aamir Wahab, DDS, of Beverly Hills, Calif., is charged with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and wire fraud. He allegedly provided fake invoices for dental services that were not rendered to the plan that provides benefits to current and former NBA players.

The scheme, orchestrated by former NBA player Terrance Williams, took place from 2017 to 2021 and totaled $5 million, prosecutors allege.

The charges against Dr. Wahab, who was arrested April 27, carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
