University of Texas, ADA given $2.4M NIH grant to research antibiotic use for gum disease

The American Dental Association Science and Research Institute and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio have received a $2.4 million grant to fund research into responsible antibiotic use for periodontal disease.

The grant, given by the National Institutes of Health's Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, will allow the two entities to conduct a clinical trial studying the responsible use of antibiotics in combination with other treatments for gum disease.

The study will be led by Georgios Kotsakis, DDS, associate professor of periodontics at the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry. Marcelo Araujo, DDS, PhD, CEO of the ADA's Science and Research Institute, will serve as co-investigator. Data from the study will be collected from 30 clinicians and involve 1,050 periodontal patients nationwide.

The trial is expected to begin in spring 2023 and the patients will be treated and followed over a one-year period, according to an April 27 news release.
