California dental practice pays $23K after disclosing protected patient information online

A California dental practice paid a $23,000 settlement after disclosing patients' protected health information while responding to negative reviews on social media.

New Vision Dental, which has offices in Pasadena and Glendora, Calif., illegally disclosed information such as patient names, treatment and insurance information, in response to patients' online reviews of the practice, according to a Dec. 14 news release from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services

In addition to the settlement, the practice will implement a corrective action plan that will be monitored for two years by the federal agency's Office of Civil Rights to ensure compliance under HIPAA.
