Pennsylvania oral surgeon gets $3.2M verdict after falling in operating room

John Alonge, DDS, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in Erie, Pa., received a $3.2 million jury verdict after slipping and falling in an operating room at Saint Vincent Hospital, according to a Sept. 18 report by Erie Times-News.

Dr. Alonge slipped and fell on the OR's newly mopped floor in July 2020, hurting his shoulder and back.

He sued in March 2021, claiming a personal injury case and that the hospital was negligent. Dr. Alonge also claimed the injuries forced him to retire about three years earlier than he had planned.

The jury found that Saint Vincent Hospital was solely negligent, awarding Dr. Alonge $3.2 million for past and future economic loss as well as past and future noneconomic loss, the report said.

Here is how the $3.2 million award was broken down:

  • $1,441,261 for past economic loss
  • $320,000 for future economic loss
  • $750,000 for past noneconomic loss
  • $750,000 for future noneconomic loss
