Six laws will be implemented beginning Jan. 1 that will change how dentistry is practiced in Illinois.
The Illinois State Dental Society detailed these laws in a Nov. 15 post on its website.
Here are six legislative changes affecting Illinois dentists next year:
1. Health insurers will be required to cover medically necessary services for children with craniofacial anomalies.
2. Insurers will be required to give advance notice to dentists that their network is being leased out and allow dentists to opt out of the new network.
3. Beginning in 2024, insurance companies can no longer require dentists to pay processing fees for electronic payments, including virtual credit cards.
4. Dentists who are prescribing certain controlled substances will be required to submit prescriptions electronically. There are several exemptions to this rule, including prescriptions for patients in certain locations, such as nursing homes and correctional facilities.
5. The Paid Leave for All Workers Act will require most Illinois employers, including dental offices, to provide employees with up to 40 hours per year of paid leave.
6. Several changes to the Illinois Dental Practice Act will go into effect.
